The Race to Authorize the Use of Legal Medical Marijuana in the U.S.

Certain medical studies have since supported prior claims that cannabis has the ability to relieve chronic pain, nausea, and other ailments, particularly among the terminally ill. Some states accordingly permit the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of certain conditions, albeit under a doctor’s supervision. CNN's Kristina Sgueglia and Greg Botelho report that the local government of New York is also set to make legal medical marijuana available soon.

A total of 20 states—including Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New Jersey—now permit the use of medical marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation. These states have their own restrictions regarding the maximum amount of medical cannabis a patient may possess. In New Jersey, for example, a patient is only entitled to a maximum amount of 2 ounces within a 30-day period.
