Legalization of Medical Marijuana: Where It Stands

A wide variety of benefits come from the use of medical marijuana to treat certain illnesses. Medical cannabis may be prescribed to treat seizure disorders, muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis, pain due to arthritis, and even nausea as a result of cancer chemotherapy sessions. Unfortunately, despite these numerous medical advantages, only 20 US states so far have legalized medical marijuana.

The cause for legalization of medical cannabis is far from over, however. In fact, ever since Washington and Colorado legalized marijuana for recreational use last year, more than half the states have considered making the move as well.

Among the states that are likely to embrace medical marijuana and its benefits are New York and Florida, with the latter, in particular, already having bills filed proposing to legalize medical marijuana. Meanwhile, in New York, two Republican state senators have already expressed their support for the Compassionate Care Act, the bill which will permit the use of cannabis for medical purposes in the state.

While momentum of medical cannabis legalization is evident in New York and Florida, those who are planning to open dispensaries once laws are passed should first consider hiring a full-service medical marijuana dispensary consulting firm. This firm will help ensure that dispensaries comply with lawful standards.
