Enhancing Medical Marijuana Dispensary Security

There are currently 21 states plus the District of Columbia that allow the sale of medical marijuana. Cultivation centers and dispensaries are needed for the growth and distribution of cannabis, which raises concerns about security for these facilities. Medical marijuana dispensary robberies are becoming alarmingly common, so if you’re planning to go into this type of business it’s vital that you implement basic security measures.

Maintain confidentiality of your marijuana garden

Be very careful who you invite to visit your marijuana garden. Although it’s exciting to show the inner workings of your business to friends, know that doing so opens you up to potential risks.

Use applicable security devices

There’s a wide variety of digital security gadgets available; choose the appropriate system that will help you monitor the safety of your garden. For instance, you can get security cameras which are very affordable. Security alarms are also great safety additions, since loud noises are often enough to scare off a robber.

Have a security threat and contingency plan

It pays to be prepared, so it’s imperative that you have a plan in case your place of business gets robbed. Some security agencies offer consultation, even help in training and implementation to protect medical dispensaries like yours from such attacks. It’s in your best interest to talk to them.

Legal Marijuana in Focus: California

Legal medical marijuana continues to shape the country, bringing much needed relief to those who really need it. If you really want to see these changes, however, you'll need to look closer, as in by state. Follow this special report on how states have come to legalize the controversial drug.

First on the list is "ground zero." California, where it all began.

The Golden State became the first state in the U.S. to legalize pot in 1996 via Ballot Proposition 215. The proposition, which was eventually known as the Compassionate Use Act on November 5th, was met with criticism about the lack of details. Democrat senator Diane Feinstein was one of Proposition 215's staunchest opponents.

However, the fate of the proposition wasn't determined by the legislature; it was determined by the people. More than five million Californians, roughly 56 percent of the entire state, voted for the legalization of medical marijuana. Soon enough, every county in California wholeheartedly, if not halfheartedly, accepted the voice of the people.

California followed with Senate Bill 420, which took effect in 2004 as the Medical Marijuana Program Act. Under the Act, a qualified patient may possess no more than eight ounces of dried pot and six (mature) or twelve (immature) pot plants. The Act also provided state protection for medical marijuana dispensaries, given that they dispense products with due requirements.

As of 2012, California remains as having the largest medical pot community in the country, with more than 553,000 patients (based on voluntary registration).

NY EO Aims to Make Medical Marijuana Legal for Hospital Distribution

Unfortunately, federal law is a high hurdle for proponents to jump over. Marijuana remains illegal under federal regulations, although individual states are not prohibited to establish their own laws on it. Hospitals, being federally-licensed medical facilities, may face shutdown or funding cuts if they distribute medical marijuana without proper approval. Even if hospitals don’t get shut down by the federal government, they’ll need to find funding to make this drug safe for medical use.

In light of this fact, medical marijuana dispensary systems, like the ones Medicine Dispensing Systems work with, may serve as a better alternative to hospital distribution, for two reasons. First, it dispenses medical marijuana products made from freshly cultivated marijuana. Second, the dispensary units are operated by separate facilities staffed with personnel who are strictly instructed to follow protocol before releasing the products.

Dosage Done Right: The Value of Legal Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

The resolution asks the state to “take up this matter with urgency, by having legislation passed which restores the liberty of Alaskan patients easily to have marijuana prescriptions filled.”

As stated in the article, the absence of a legal marijuana dispensary would force patients who need the drug for medication to purchase it from the black market; obviously, this is a problem that needs to be rectified immediately. Dispensaries are one of the safest ways to sell medicinal marijuana without the negative connotations. Medical cannabis businesses looking to make their operations legitimate should consider using automated medical marijuana dispensaries.
